SE Radio 92: Introduction to Game Development

Recording Venue:
Guest(s): Oliver Jucknath
Host(s): Arno
In this Episode, Arno talks with Oliver Jucknath about the art of writing computer games. A lot of myth is attached to this area of computing, and while a game technically is just another program, it is written in a different context than typical business applications.

This is true at the code level, where aggressive optimization is a focus throughout development. It also applies at the team level, where collaboration between specialists is pronounced. And the business context is different as well, which in turn influences the development effort as a whole.

  • How about this suggestion: Place advertisement at the end, but as in this episode, at the beginning of podcast, give an short description of what the advert is about.

Putting advert at the beginning probably give you more advert revenue because it is less likely that listeners will skip it.
Most listeners include me accept it if it is 15s will not alienate any listener… and it can be in ‘C’ if the advertiser prefer.

Having the presenter give a short description at the beginning is the middle ground. This is a podcast, and therefore, unlike radio where everyone have to start from the beginning, listener can jump around the podcast. Lets make use of it to support SE Radio.

  • I just wanted to say that I really loved this particular episode. I hope you talk about gaming software architecture in the future too. With regard to ads in the podcast, I really wouldn’t mind a 15 sec ad at the start of the show. You guys do such a great job, so you are entitled to have some advertisement.

  • for your feedback on the advertisement stuff.

Yes, we’re planning to have more stuff on games, specifically on architecture. Not sure, when that’ll happen, but it is on the list.

    Cheers,
    Markus

    yes, that’s our official plan.

right. We don’t need a big revenue stream, so I’d rather have less
money and put it at the end.

    right.

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • To be honest I don’t see why you need to justify the ads to us listeners, just say who is sponsoring a particular episode and get it over with instead of going on and on explaining why you’re including the ad. The rails envy podcast does it that way, I don’t mind it at all.
